Chokepoint

A narrow passage or strategic location whose disruption can constrain movement through a wider transport network. Chokepoints concentrate traffic, making their control or closure consequential.

Network theory: The study of systems represented as nodes connected by links. A chokepoint is a constrained link whose failure can affect many routes.
Strait of Hormuz: A narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A large share of seaborne oil exports from the Gulf passes through this strait.
Sea lines of communication: Maritime routes used to move military forces, supplies, and trade. Navies protect these routes where chokepoints make traffic predictable and exposed.
Blockade: The prevention of people or goods from entering or leaving a place, usually by force. A blockade can deliberately close a chokepoint to restrict an adversary’s trade or movement.
Arctic shipping routes: Sea routes across Arctic waters whose accessibility changes with sea ice and infrastructure. Greater access could shorten some voyages while creating new strategic passages and hazards.
Betweenness centrality: A network measure counting how often a node or link lies on shortest paths between other nodes. High betweenness identifies routes whose interruption can isolate many destinations.
Suez Canal: An artificial sea-level waterway linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea across Egypt. Its closure can force ships between Europe and Asia onto longer routes around Africa.
Maritime security: The protection of vessels, ports, and maritime activity from threats and disruption. Securing chokepoints is a central concern for states and shipping operators.
Economic warfare: The use of economic measures to weaken an adversary or compel a change in policy. Disrupting a chokepoint can impose costs far beyond the location itself.
Northern Sea Route: A shipping route along Russia’s Arctic coast connecting the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Its future viability could change traffic patterns between established maritime chokepoints.
