Knowra Chott el Djerid Chott el Djerid Chott el Djerid is a vast endorheic salt lake in southwestern Tunisia. Its shallow, highly saline waters often evaporate, leaving broad salt flats where mirages are common.
Endorheic basin : A drainage basin whose water does not flow to the ocean, instead collecting or evaporating inland. The lake has no outlet to the sea, so incoming water and dissolved salts remain within its basin.
Chott : A North African salt lake or salt flat that is usually dry or shallow and may hold water seasonally. Chott el Djerid belongs to a regional class of saline basins found across arid North Africa.
Tozeur : A city and oasis in southwestern Tunisia, on the northern edge of Chott el Djerid. Tozeur is a major nearby settlement and a common base for reaching the lake.
Chott el Fejej : A saline depression in southern Tunisia connected geographically with the Chott el Djerid basin. It is a distinct neighboring feature within the region’s network of salt depressions.
Evaporite : A mineral deposit formed when dissolved substances precipitate as water evaporates. Evaporation concentrates salts in the lake and leaves mineral deposits across its dry surface.
Holocene : The current geological epoch, beginning about 11,700 years ago after the last major glacial period. Holocene climate shifts altered water supply and helped shape the modern desert basin.
Kebili : A town and governorate in southwestern Tunisia, situated near the eastern side of Chott el Djerid. Kebili anchors communities and routes along the lake’s eastern margin.
Dahar Mountains : A range of hills and plateaus in southeastern Tunisia, east of the Chott el Djerid region. The uplands form part of the wider terrain bordering the basin to the east.
Halite : The mineral form of sodium chloride, commonly known as rock salt. Halite is among the salts left behind as the lake’s water evaporates.
Sahara : The world’s largest hot desert, spanning much of North Africa. The lake lies within the Sahara’s arid interior, where evaporation exceeds replenishment.
