Chouannerie

The Chouannerie was a royalist insurgency in western France against the French Republic, beginning in 1794 and recurring intermittently into the early 19th century.

French Revolution: A period of political and social upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that ended the monarchy and transformed the state. Revolutionary changes created the political conflict from which the Chouannerie emerged.
Jean Chouan: The nom de guerre of Jean Cottereau, a prominent early Chouan insurgent leader in Mayenne. His name gave the movement its designation and became its enduring symbol.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which small forces use mobility, surprise, and local support against stronger opponents. Chouan bands used ambushes and rapid dispersal to challenge Republican troops.
Treaty of La Jaunaye: A 1795 agreement between Republican representatives and Vendéan insurgents that granted religious and political concessions. It exemplifies the negotiated settlements used to quiet royalist resistance in the west.
Civil Constitution of the Clergy: A 1790 law that reorganized the French Catholic Church and required clergy to swear loyalty to the state. Resistance to the law deepened religious opposition to the Republic in western France.
Georges Cadoudal: A Breton royalist leader who commanded Chouan forces and later organized conspiracies against Napoleon Bonaparte. His leadership connected regional insurgency with royalist plots against the Consulate.
Counterinsurgency: Military, political, and social measures intended to defeat an insurgency and restore government control. Republican forces combined military repression with efforts to isolate insurgents from local support.
Treaty of Mabilais: A 1795 agreement between Republican representatives and Breton insurgents that temporarily suspended hostilities. It marked a brief attempt to end the Chouannerie through negotiation.
Constitutional clergy: Catholic clergy who accepted the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and swore allegiance to the revolutionary state. Their division from nonjuring clergy sharpened local religious conflict during the insurgency.
Joseph de Puisaye: A French royalist officer who organized insurgent forces in Brittany and helped plan the 1795 Quiberon expedition. He sought to coordinate Breton Chouans with émigré forces and British support.
