Chremonidean War

The Chremonidean War was a conflict from 267 to 261 BCE in which Athens, Sparta, and Ptolemaic Egypt opposed Macedonian control of Greece. Macedon won and retained its dominance over Athens.

Antigonus II Gonatas: A Macedonian king who ruled from 277 to 239 BCE and secured Macedonian power in Greece. His forces defended Macedonian control against the coalition.
Decree of Chremonides: An Athenian decree establishing an alliance with Sparta and Ptolemaic Egypt against Macedon. This inscription records the coalition’s formal declaration and its stated grounds.
Macedonian domination of Greece: The political and military ascendancy of Macedonian kings over the Greek mainland in the Hellenistic period. The war’s outcome preserved this broader pattern of control.

Athenian democracy: A system of government in which eligible male citizens participated directly in Athenian political decisions. Athens’ democratic institutions authorized its renewed resistance to Macedonian rule.
Sparta: An ancient Greek city-state in the Peloponnese, known for its military institutions and distinctive political system. Sparta joined Athens in opposing Macedonian supremacy.
