Chris Burden

Chris Burden (1946–2015) was an American artist whose performances and sculptures explored danger, endurance, technology, and power.

Shoot: Chris Burden’s 1971 performance in which an assistant shot him in the arm with a rifle. This brief, real injury became his most notorious demonstration of danger as performance.
Endurance art: Art in which an artist’s sustained physical or psychological effort is central to the work. Burden’s timed actions make endurance itself a material and measure.
University of California, Irvine: A public research university in Southern California, founded in 1965. Burden studied art there and completed his MFA in 1969.
Marina Abramović: A Serbian performance artist known for works involving duration, presence, and audience participation. Her practice offers a distinct comparison in the use of endurance and bodily exposure.
