Christendom

Christendom is the worldwide community of Christians and, historically, the lands and societies shaped by Christianity, especially medieval Europe.

Early Christianity: The Christian movement and communities that developed from the first century through the early fourth century. The earliest communities became the foundation of the wider Christian world.
Medieval Catholic Church: The western Christian institution headed by the papacy and structured through dioceses, monasteries, and religious orders. Its shared hierarchy gave western Christendom institutions that crossed political boundaries.
Ummah: The worldwide community of Muslims, understood in Islamic tradition as a religious community transcending political borders. It offers a parallel model of a transnational religious community without making the two traditions equivalent.
Investiture Controversy: A late eleventh- and early twelfth-century conflict over whether secular rulers could appoint bishops and abbots. The dispute exposed tensions between church and imperial authority within Latin Christendom.

Dar al-Islam: A classical Islamic legal and political concept for territories under Muslim rule, with definitions varying among jurists. Its territorial emphasis contrasts with Christendom's shifting meanings as both community and Christian-ruled lands.
Peace of Westphalia: The 1648 agreements that ended the Thirty Years' War and reshaped political relations within the Holy Roman Empire and Europe. Its settlement is often linked to the declining reach of a unified Christian political order.
Christian identity: The sense of belonging and self-understanding shaped by affiliation with Christianity and its traditions. Shared identity could bind communities across kingdoms even when political unity was absent.
