Christiaan de Wet

Christiaan de Wet (1854–1922) was a Boer military commander and politician who became a leading guerrilla strategist against British forces in the Second Boer War.

Second Boer War: A war fought from 1899 to 1902 between the British Empire and the Boer republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State. De Wet’s campaigns became a defining part of its later, guerrilla phase.

Siege of Wepener: A Boer siege of British and colonial forces at Wepener in the Orange Free State in April 1900. De Wet’s forces helped besiege the town before British relief ended the operation.
Louis Botha: A Boer general and South African statesman who became the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa. Botha shared de Wet’s wartime leadership but pursued reconciliation and national government after the war.
Afrikaner nationalism: A political movement promoting the interests, identity, and self-government of Afrikaners in South Africa. De Wet’s wartime reputation and later politics made him a prominent figure in the movement.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use mobility, surprise, and concealment against stronger opponents. His post-1900 operations relied on raids and evasion rather than holding territory.
Battle of Rooiwal: A British victory over a Boer force near Klerksdorp on 11 April 1902, during the final phase of the Second Boer War. De Wet was among the Boer leaders whose forces were defeated as the war neared its end.
