Christiaan Huygens

Christiaan Huygens (1629–1695) was a Dutch mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and inventor. He developed the pendulum clock, proposed a wave theory of light, and discovered Saturn’s moon Titan.

Pendulum clock: A clock that measures time using the regular swing of a pendulum. Huygens designed the first practical pendulum clock in 1656.
Huygens' principle: A construction in which each point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary wavelets. This principle expresses Huygens’s model of light propagation.
Constantijn Huygens: A Dutch poet, diplomat, and composer who was Christiaan Huygens’s father. His status and intellectual circle supported Christiaan’s early education.
Isaac Newton: An English mathematician and natural philosopher who formulated laws of motion and universal gravitation. Newton favored a corpuscular account of light over Huygens’s wave theory.
Huygens–Fresnel principle: A wave-propagation principle that treats each point on a wavefront as a source of secondary waves. It extends Huygens’s account of how light waves propagate.
Cycloidal pendulum: A pendulum constrained by cycloidal guides, whose period is independent of its swing amplitude. Huygens studied this design to make pendulum timing more uniform.
Leiden University: A Dutch university founded in 1575, among Europe’s oldest institutions of higher education. Huygens studied law and mathematics there.
Corpuscular theory of light: A theory that explains light as a stream of tiny particles. It directly opposed Huygens’s explanation of light as a wave.
Titan: Saturn’s largest moon and the only moon known to have a dense nitrogen-rich atmosphere. Huygens discovered Titan in 1655.
Isochronism: The property of taking equal times to complete repeated oscillations despite changes in amplitude. Achieving isochronism was central to improving pendulum-clock accuracy.
