Christian anti-Judaism

Christian anti-Judaism is hostility toward Judaism expressed in Christian thought, preaching, or institutions. It has taken forms ranging from theological claims of Jewish error to laws and violence against Jewish communities.

Supersessionism: The belief that the Christian church has replaced Israel as the people of God or inherited its covenant. This doctrine supplied a major rationale for depicting Judaism as obsolete.
New Testament: The Christian collection of writings about Jesus, early Christianity, and its scriptures. Its polemical passages became major sources for later anti-Jewish interpretation.
John Chrysostom: A fourth-century Christian bishop and preacher known for influential biblical homilies. His sermons against Judaizing Christians became enduring examples of anti-Jewish rhetoric.
Fourth Council of the Lateran: A 1215 Catholic church council that issued reforms and regulations, including rules distinguishing Jews from Christians. Its regulations reinforced visible separation and legal subordination in Latin Christendom.
Antisemitism and anti-Judaism: Two overlapping forms of hostility toward Jews, distinguished by their historical sources and rationales. The distinction clarifies how theological hostility relates to modern antisemitism without treating them as identical.
Deicide charge: The accusation that Jews collectively bear responsibility for the death of Jesus. This charge turned Gospel narratives into inherited collective blame.
