Christian IV of Denmark

Christian IV ruled Denmark and Norway from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign combined state-building, urban foundations, ambitious construction, and costly wars.

Copenhagen: The capital of Denmark, developed into a major fortified and commercial city during Christian IV’s reign. He expanded and fortified the city, adding districts and landmark buildings.
Sound Dues: Tolls levied by Denmark on ships passing through the Øresund strait from the fifteenth century to 1857. Revenue from the tolls funded the monarchy and made control of the strait a strategic priority.
Kalmar War: A war between Denmark–Norway and Sweden from 1611 to 1613, ending with the Treaty of Knäred. Christian IV led Denmark–Norway in a conflict that secured concessions but burdened royal finances.
Anne Catherine of Brandenburg: The first wife of Christian IV and queen of Denmark and Norway from 1597 until her death in 1612. Their marriage connected the Danish court to the Brandenburg dynasty.
Kristianstad: A city in southern Sweden founded by Christian IV in 1614 as a fortified Danish town. Its planned defenses and grid layout exemplify his program of urban foundations.

Kirsten Munk: A Danish noblewoman who became Christian IV’s morganatic wife and mother of twelve of his children. Her influential position and later estrangement affected the royal household and succession politics.
Glückstadt: A town on the Elbe founded by Christian IV in 1617 to rival Hamburg and strengthen Danish trade. It was designed to attract commerce and extend Danish influence along the Elbe.
Danish National Archives: Denmark’s central repository for historical records, including documents produced by royal government. Its surviving records preserve evidence of his administration and correspondence.
