Christian universalism

Christian universalism is the belief that God will ultimately reconcile every person to salvation through Christ, rather than leave anyone eternally condemned.

Apocatastasis: The restoration of all things, including the eventual salvation of every person. This ancient term names the universal restoration at the heart of the belief.
Christian exclusivism: The view that salvation is available only through explicit Christian faith or membership. It restricts salvation in a way universalism rejects.
Origen: An early Christian theologian whose writings included arguments for the eventual restoration of rational creatures. His account of restoration became a major source for later universalist theology.
Romans 5: A New Testament chapter contrasting Adam’s trespass with the grace and life associated with Jesus Christ. Its comparison of the many affected by Adam and Christ anchors universalist readings.
George MacDonald: A nineteenth-century Scottish novelist and theologian whose writings presented a hopeful vision of divine judgment and restoration. His imaginative theology influenced modern Christian universalist thought.
Universal reconciliation: The theological claim that all people will ultimately be reconciled to God. It states the belief’s central outcome in direct theological language.
Christian inclusivism: The view that people may be saved through Christ without explicit Christian faith. It extends salvation beyond Christians without claiming that everyone is saved.
Gregory of Nyssa: A fourth-century Cappadocian theologian who wrote about the eventual purification and restoration of human nature. His writings are often cited in discussions of universal salvation among early Christians.
1 Corinthians 15: A New Testament chapter on Christ’s resurrection and the defeat of death. Its promise that all are made alive in Christ is central to universalist interpretation.
Hosea Ballou: An American Universalist minister and theologian who argued that divine punishment is remedial rather than endless. He helped establish a distinctly American theological case for universal salvation.
