Christoph Willibald Gluck

Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787) was a German-born composer whose operas sought dramatic clarity through integrated music and action, notably in Orfeo ed Euridice and Iphigénie en Tauride.

Orfeo ed Euridice: Gluck’s opera about Orpheus’s attempt to bring Eurydice back from the dead. Its direct dramatic design became the clearest early example of Gluck’s operatic reform.
Opera seria: An eighteenth-century Italian opera genre built around noble subjects, da capo arias, and virtuoso singing. Its conventional separation of recitative and showpiece aria supplied the model Gluck sought to loosen.
