Chrome yellow

Chrome yellow is a bright yellow pigment made primarily from lead chromate. It was widely used in paints and printing inks before toxicity and fading concerns curtailed its use.

Lead(II) chromate: Lead(II) chromate is an inorganic compound with formula PbCrO₄, used as the principal component of chrome yellow. This compound supplies the pigment’s characteristic yellow color.

Cadmium yellow: Cadmium yellow is a family of yellow pigments based primarily on cadmium sulfide. It offered artists a bright, opaque yellow without lead chromate’s composition.
Chromate: Chromate is the negatively charged ion CrO₄²⁻ and the name for salts containing it. Chrome yellow belongs to the family of chromate compounds.

Azo yellow: Azo yellow pigments are synthetic organic colorants containing one or more azo groups. These modern yellows can replace chrome yellow in many applications.
