Chrysippus

Chrysippus was a third-century BCE Greek philosopher who led the Stoic school and systematized its logic, ethics, and physics. More than 700 works were attributed to him, but none survives intact.

Stoicism: A Hellenistic philosophy that teaches living rationally in accordance with nature and virtue. Chrysippus gave this school much of its systematic form.
Propositional logic: The study of how the truth of compound statements depends on the truth of their components. Stoic inference patterns helped establish logic centered on propositions rather than terms.
Zeno of Citium: A Greek philosopher who founded the Stoic school in Athens around the early third century BCE. Chrysippus succeeded the school’s founder and developed his teachings into a comprehensive system.
Stoa Poikile: A painted colonnade in the Athenian Agora where Zeno taught and the Stoic school gained its name. The school Chrysippus led took its name from this Athenian meeting place.
Cicero: A Roman statesman and author whose philosophical works discuss Greek schools, including Stoicism. His Latin accounts preserve and assess arguments from Chrysippus’s school.
Stoic logic: A propositional logic developed by the Stoics, centered on whole statements and their relations. Chrysippus’s logical work became the school’s most distinctive technical achievement.
Indemonstrables: Basic valid inference forms in Stoic logic that do not require proof from simpler forms. Chrysippus’s system used these patterns as foundations for deriving further arguments.
Cleanthes: A Greek Stoic philosopher who led the school before Chrysippus. Chrysippus followed Cleanthes as head of the Stoa.
Athens: An ancient Greek city-state that became a major center of philosophy, art, and political life. Chrysippus studied and led the Stoic school in Athens.
Seneca the Younger: A Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist, and statesman whose essays and letters survive. His writings show how later Roman Stoicism inherited and adapted the tradition Chrysippus systematized.
