Chu Ci

Chu Ci is an anthology of ancient Chinese poetry associated especially with the southern state of Chu. Its poems are notable for regional imagery, shamanic motifs, and distinctive verse forms.

State of Chu: A powerful ancient Chinese state centered in the Yangzi River region during the Zhou dynasty. The anthology’s name and many poems connect it to Chu’s people, landscape, and court.
Sao style: A poetic form associated with Chu Ci, marked by variable lines and the recurring particle xi. The form gives many poems their recognizable cadence and expressive reach.
Liu Xiang: A Han dynasty scholar and librarian who edited and catalogued classical texts. He is credited with arranging the received Chu Ci collection.
