Chu

Chu was a major state of ancient China, centered in the Yangtze River region and powerful during the Eastern Zhou dynasty. Its distinctive culture blended Zhou institutions with southern traditions.

State of Xiong: The ruling polity associated with the Xiong clan before Chu became a major territorial state. The Xiong rulers’ early polity formed the dynastic foundation of Chu.
Chu kingship: The hereditary monarchy that ruled Chu and claimed royal status during the Eastern Zhou era. Chu’s rulers asserted a kingship more independent than the titles granted by Zhou authority.
Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing across central China to the East China Sea. Its basin anchored Chu’s territory and connected southern regions to the central plains.
Chu Ci: An anthology of ancient Chinese poetry associated with the southern state of Chu and its literary traditions. Its poems preserve a distinctive literary voice linked to Chu’s landscapes and myths.
Western Zhou dynasty: The Zhou dynasty’s first phase, when kings governed from the western capital and enfeoffed regional lords. Chu’s early rulers held Zhou titles within the political order established in this era.
Chu State (administrative system): The officials, territorial divisions, and court practices through which Chu rulers governed their state. Its administration helped manage Chu’s large and culturally diverse territory.
Jianghan Plain: A lowland region in present-day Hubei between the Yangtze and Han rivers. The plain contained Chu’s political heartland and capital sites.
Qu Yuan: A poet and court official traditionally associated with Chu and the authorship of major Chu Ci poems. His later reputation became inseparable from Chu’s poetic heritage.
Eastern Zhou dynasty: The Zhou dynasty’s later phase, marked by weakening royal authority and competing regional states. Chu expanded as the eastern Zhou kings lost control over their former domains.
Wu Qi: A military commander and reformer who served several states, including Chu in the fourth century BCE. His reforms under King Dao strengthened Chu’s central government and military.
