Church

A church is a Christian place of worship and, in some traditions, a local congregation. The word can also denote the wider Christian community or institution.

Christianity: A religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Churches are the central places and communities of Christian worship.
Eucharist: A Christian sacrament commemorating Jesus Christ’s Last Supper through bread and wine. Many churches center regular services on this sacrament, also called Communion.
Catholic Church: The worldwide Christian church in communion with the pope, centered in Rome. Its global hierarchy and sacramental understanding exemplify one major model of church.
Church and state: The relationship between religious institutions and civil government. Churches have negotiated, shared, and contested authority with governments.
Body of Christ: A Christian image of the church as a unified community whose members are joined to Christ. This metaphor expresses church as a living community rather than merely a building.
Congregation: A local assembly of people gathered for religious worship and community life. In many traditions, a church is the congregation as well as its building.
Baptism: A Christian rite of initiation involving water and admission into the church community. Churches commonly host baptism as a public act of Christian belonging.
Eastern Orthodox Church: A communion of self-governing Eastern Christian churches sharing Orthodox doctrine and worship. Its network of churches contrasts with centralized papal governance.
Christian monasticism: A Christian way of life centered on communal or solitary religious discipline. Monasteries grew from church traditions while developing distinctive institutions and practices.
Ecclesiology: The branch of Christian theology concerned with the nature and organization of the church. Ecclesiology examines competing accounts of what makes a church the church.
