Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson (1924–2021) was an American actress celebrated for stage, film, and television portrayals of complex Black women, including roles that challenged stereotyped representation.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman: A 1974 television film in which a Black woman recounts her life across a century of American history. Tyson’s performance as Jane Pittman earned her two Emmy Awards.
Ruby Dee: An American actress, poet, and civil rights activist known for stage, film, and television work. Dee and Tyson were contemporaries who expanded opportunities for Black actresses.
Presidential Medal of Freedom: The highest civilian honor awarded by the president of the United States. Tyson received the medal in 2016 for her contributions to American culture.
