Cimetidine

Cimetidine is a histamine H₂-receptor antagonist that reduces stomach acid secretion. It is used to treat peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, and other acid-related conditions.

Histamine H₂ receptor: A G protein-coupled receptor that mediates histamine’s effects on gastric acid secretion and several other tissues. Cimetidine reduces acid by competitively blocking this receptor on gastric parietal cells.
Peptic ulcer disease: A condition involving an ulcer in the stomach or duodenal lining, commonly associated with Helicobacter pylori or NSAID use. Cimetidine was used to promote healing by reducing acid exposure.
James Black: A Scottish pharmacologist whose receptor-based drug research led to propranolol and cimetidine. Black’s group developed cimetidine by translating H₂-receptor pharmacology into a medicine.
Ulcer treatment: Medical approaches to healing ulcers and preventing their recurrence. Cimetidine helped make pharmacological acid suppression a routine alternative to ulcer surgery.
Gastric parietal cell: A stomach cell that secretes hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor. Cimetidine acts on H₂ receptors here to reduce acid output.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease: A chronic condition in which stomach contents reflux into the esophagus and cause troublesome symptoms or complications. Cimetidine can relieve reflux symptoms by lowering gastric acidity.
Smith, Kline & French: An American pharmaceutical company that developed cimetidine and later became part of GlaxoSmithKline. Its research team brought cimetidine from laboratory design to clinical use.
Drug interaction: A change in a medicine’s effects caused by another drug, food, or substance. Cimetidine’s inhibition of drug-metabolizing enzymes made interaction checking especially important.
Gastric acid secretion: The process by which stomach parietal cells release hydrochloric acid into the stomach lumen. This is the physiological output cimetidine suppresses.
Zollinger–Ellison syndrome: A rare disorder in which gastrin-secreting tumors cause excessive gastric acid production. Cimetidine can reduce acid in this condition, though stronger suppression is often needed.
