Circle method

The circle method is an analytic technique for estimating coefficients of generating functions through integrals around the unit circle, especially in additive number theory.

Generating function: A formal power series whose coefficients encode a sequence or combinatorial structure. The method extracts and estimates coefficients from these power series.
Waring's problem: The problem of representing every positive integer as a sum of a fixed number of positive integer powers. The circle method gives asymptotic counts of representations as sums of powers.
G. H. Hardy: A British mathematician whose work spanned analytic number theory, analysis, and mathematical collaboration. Hardy helped develop the method and applied it to partition asymptotics.
Exponential sum: A finite sum of complex exponentials whose phases depend on integer variables. Generating functions for additive problems often reduce to exponential sums on the circle.
Vinogradov mean value theorem: A theorem bounding mean values of exponential sums over polynomial phases. Sharper bounds for these sums strengthen minor-arc estimates in Waring-type problems.
Cauchy's coefficient formula: A contour-integral identity that expresses a holomorphic function's Taylor coefficient as an integral around a closed curve. It turns coefficient estimation into the contour integration at the method's core.
Goldbach conjecture: The conjecture that every even integer greater than two is the sum of two primes. Hardy's and Littlewood's circle-method framework produced influential conditional estimates for prime representations.
Srinivasa Ramanujan: An Indian mathematician known for deep results in number theory, infinite series, and partitions. His partition work with Hardy helped establish the method's early reach.
Modular form: A holomorphic function on the upper half-plane that transforms predictably under a discrete group of fractional linear maps. Transformation laws can evaluate or approximate generating functions near rational points.
Kloosterman sum: A finite exponential sum involving a modular inverse, central in analytic number theory. Such sums arise in refined circle-method formulas and require delicate cancellation bounds.
