Cisgender

Cisgender describes people whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. It is a descriptive identity term, not a measure of gender expression or sexual orientation.

Gender identity: A person's internal sense of their own gender, such as woman, man, both, or neither. Cisgender status is defined by how this identity relates to sex assigned at birth.
Transgender: Describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. It names the contrasting relation between gender identity and assigned sex.
Cisnormativity: The assumption that everyone is cisgender and that cisgender identities are the default or preferred norm. The term cisgender makes this often-unspoken assumption easier to name.
Cis–trans distinction: A linguistic opposition in which cis means on this side and trans means across or on the other side. The prefix pair supplied a concise way to name contrasting relations to assigned sex.
Sex assignment: The classification of an infant's sex, usually recorded at birth using observed physical traits. This is the reference point against which cisgender identity is defined.
Non-binary gender: Gender identities that are not exclusively woman or man. Some non-binary people identify as cisgender, while others identify as transgender.
Cisgender privilege: Social advantages that can accrue to people whose gender identity aligns with assigned sex. The concept helps describe unequal treatment without treating cisgender people as identical.
Volkmar Sigusch: A German sexologist and psychiatrist whose work included early use of the term cissexual. His terminology helped establish cis- as a counterpart to trans- in sexology.
Gender expression: The outward presentation of gender through clothing, behavior, voice, or other features. Expression can vary independently of whether someone is cisgender.
Agender: A gender identity characterized by having no gender or a limited connection to gender. It shows why gender identity cannot be inferred from assigned sex alone.
