Citizenship : Citizenship is membership in a political community, usually carrying legal rights and duties. Civic rights and responsibilities are commonly defined through membership in a state.
Voting : Voting is the formal casting of a choice in an election or other decision process. It is a direct way citizens select representatives and influence public decisions.
Political Science : Political science is the systematic study of political institutions, behavior, power, and ideas. It is the broader academic field that includes research beyond civic education.
Accountability : Accountability is the obligation of officials or institutions to explain and answer for their actions. Civic oversight gives citizens ways to demand answers from those in public office.
Constitution : A constitution establishes a political system’s governing institutions, powers, and limits. Constitutions set the framework within which civic institutions operate.
Local Government : Local government administers public affairs within a municipality, county, or other subnational area. Local institutions make civic responsibilities tangible through nearby services and decisions.
Civic Education : Civic education teaches knowledge, skills, and dispositions for informed participation in public life. It is the instructional practice built around many subjects civics studies.
Democratic Legitimacy : Democratic legitimacy is public acceptance of political authority grounded in democratic procedures and principles. Participation and lawful institutions help sustain acceptance of government decisions.
Rule of Law : Rule of law is the principle that public authority and individuals are subject to publicly known laws. It explains how laws constrain governments as well as citizens.
Jury : A jury is a group of people selected to decide factual questions in a legal proceeding. Jury service is a civic duty that brings citizens into the administration of justice.
