Civil service examination

A system for selecting government officials through standardized examinations. In China, it developed into an extensive route into state service during later dynasties.

Imperial examination: China’s examination system for recruiting officials through tests on classical learning and related subjects. This is the Chinese form of the system, developed across successive dynasties.

Emperor Taizong of Tang: A Tang dynasty emperor who ruled from 626 to 649 and consolidated the dynasty’s institutions. His reign supported the expansion of examinations as a route to government service.
Chinese gentry: The educated local elite in imperial China, often connected to landholding, office, and classical learning. Examination success could raise a family’s standing and strengthen its local influence.
Hereditary office: A government position passed through family inheritance rather than selection by examination or appointment. Examinations offered an alternative to filling public posts primarily through birth.
