Knowra Claes Oldenburg Claes Oldenburg Claes Oldenburg (1929–2022) was a Swedish-born American sculptor known for Pop Art works that enlarged, softened, or monumentalized everyday objects, often with Coosje van Bruggen.
Spoonbridge and Cherry : A giant spoon supporting a cherry sculpture installed at Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center. This fountain sculpture, made with Coosje van Bruggen, is among Oldenburg’s best-known public works.
Soft sculpture : Sculpture made from pliable materials that sag, fold, or change shape rather than holding rigid form. Oldenburg’s soft objects overturn the expectation that sculpture must be hard and stable.
Coosje van Bruggen : A Dutch-born art historian and sculptor who collaborated with Claes Oldenburg on large-scale public works. From 1976 onward, she co-designed many of his most prominent monumental sculptures.
The Store : Claes Oldenburg’s 1961 installation and Lower Manhattan storefront filled with handmade, brightly painted objects resembling consumer goods. It brought his interest in ordinary commodities into an immersive, shop-like environment.
