Clarithromycin

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is used against several respiratory, skin, and other bacterial infections.

50S ribosomal subunit: The large subunit of bacterial ribosomes, where peptide bonds form and several antibiotics bind. Clarithromycin binds this subunit and disrupts bacterial protein synthesis.
Helicobacter pylori eradication: Treatment regimens designed to eliminate Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with ulcers and gastric cancer. Clarithromycin has been used in combination regimens, though resistance affects its suitability.
Azithromycin: A macrolide antibiotic with a long tissue half-life and activity against several respiratory pathogens. It often offers simpler dosing and fewer drug interactions than clarithromycin.
CYP3A4: A liver enzyme that metabolizes many medications and is inhibited by several drugs. Clarithromycin inhibits CYP3A4, raising concentrations of some co-administered medicines.
Macrolide: A class of antibiotics characterized by a macrocyclic lactone ring and inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis. Clarithromycin belongs to this antibiotic family and shares its ribosomal mode of action.

QT interval: The portion of an electrocardiogram representing ventricular depolarization and repolarization. Clarithromycin can prolong the QT interval and increase the risk of dangerous arrhythmias.
Bacterial protein synthesis: The cellular process by which bacterial ribosomes translate messenger RNA into proteins. Clarithromycin slows this process by blocking translation at the ribosome.
Mycobacterium avium complex: A group of environmental mycobacteria that can cause pulmonary disease and disseminated infection. Clarithromycin is a key drug in treatment and prevention regimens for susceptible infections.
