Clark L. Hull

Clark L. Hull (1884–1952) was an American psychologist who developed drive-reduction theory and formal mathematical models of learning and behavior.

Drive-reduction theory: A theory that behavior is motivated by reducing physiological needs and the aversive drives they produce. Hull made drive reduction the central motive behind learned behavior.
Drive: An internal motivational state associated with physiological need and energizing behavior. In Hull’s model, drive raises response likelihood but does not specify which response is learned.
Behaviorism: An approach to psychology that emphasizes observable behavior and its relations to environmental conditions. Hull sought to give behaviorism precise laws and testable mathematical form.
