Clark Wissler

Clark Wissler (1870–1947) was an American anthropologist who developed the culture-area concept and conducted ethnographic and archaeological research among Indigenous peoples of North America.

Franz Boas: German-American anthropologist who established historical particularism and trained a generation of American anthropologists. Boas supervised Wissler’s doctoral work and influenced his approach to anthropological research.
Culture area: A geographic region whose communities share a characteristic combination of cultural traits. Wissler made culture areas a framework for comparing Indigenous societies across North America.
Blackfoot Confederacy: A confederacy of Indigenous peoples of the North American Plains, including the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani. Wissler’s ethnographic research among Blackfoot communities contributed to his Plains culture studies.
Ethnographic present: A writing convention that describes a society as if its observed customs existed outside historical change. Wissler’s regional summaries could make changing Indigenous societies appear static and bounded.

George Bird Grinnell: American naturalist and ethnographer whose writings documented Plains Indigenous peoples, especially the Blackfoot. Grinnell’s Blackfoot studies informed Wissler’s research on Plains cultures.
Culture trait distribution: The geographic pattern formed by the presence and absence of a cultural trait. Wissler used trait distributions to infer cultural centers and the spread of practices.
