Knowra Claude Lorrain Claude Lorrain Claude Lorrain (c. 1600–1682) was a French painter and etcher whose idealized landscapes use luminous skies, classical ruins, and small pastoral figures to evoke the ancient world.
Ideal landscape : A composed landscape that transforms observed nature into an ordered, often classical or pastoral vision. Lorrain arranged natural and architectural elements into harmonious scenes rather than recording a single view.
Claude glass : A tinted convex mirror used by artists and tourists to view landscapes in simplified tonal arrangements. Its later association with Lorrain reflects the appeal of his composed, tonally unified scenery.
Lorraine : A historical region of northeastern France, bordering the German-speaking lands of central Europe. Lorrain was born in this region, from which his familiar artistic name derives.
