Claude-Louis Navier

Claude-Louis Navier (1785–1836) was a French engineer and applied mathematician whose work on elasticity and fluid mechanics helped establish the Navier–Stokes equations.

Continuum mechanics: The study of matter modeled as continuously distributed rather than as discrete particles. Navier applied continuum mathematics to deformable solids and moving fluids.
Navier–Stokes equations: Nonlinear partial differential equations describing the motion of viscous fluids. Navier’s 1820s work introduced viscous terms into equations for fluid motion.
École des Ponts ParisTech: A French engineering school founded in 1747 to train engineers for public works. Navier studied and later taught at the institution central to his engineering career.
George Gabriel Stokes: An Irish mathematician and physicist whose work advanced fluid mechanics, optics, and mathematical physics. Stokes independently developed the viscous-fluid equations now joined to Navier’s name.
Computational fluid dynamics: The numerical simulation of fluid flow using computational methods. Modern simulations solve discretized forms of equations bearing Navier’s name.
Elasticity: The study of how materials deform under forces and recover when those forces are removed. Navier developed an influential mathematical theory relating elastic deformation to internal forces.
Conservation of momentum: The principle that a system’s total momentum remains constant unless acted on by external forces. The fluid equations express momentum balance for each small region of moving fluid.
Joseph-Louis Lagrange: An Italian-born mathematician and physicist whose work shaped mechanics and mathematical analysis. Lagrange’s mathematical mechanics formed part of the intellectual tradition Navier extended.
Jean-Claude Barré de Saint-Venant: A French mechanician who advanced elasticity, fluid mechanics, and the theory of torsion. His later work refined and extended mathematical theories Navier had helped establish.
Turbulence: Irregular, fluctuating fluid motion characterized by interacting structures across many scales. The nonlinear equations Navier helped establish govern turbulent flow, though predicting it remains difficult.
