Claymation

Claymation is stop-motion animation made by reshaping modeling-clay figures or objects between photographed frames. Their incremental changes create the illusion of continuous movement.

Stop-motion animation: Animation created by photographing physical objects in successive poses and displaying the images in sequence. Claymation is a stop-motion technique whose figures are reshaped between exposures.
Will Vinton: An American animator and filmmaker who popularized the term “Claymation.” Vinton’s studio gave clay animation a widely recognized name and identity.
Wallace and Gromit: A British stop-motion comedy franchise featuring inventor Wallace and his dog Gromit. Its films use expressive clay characters for tightly timed visual comedy.
Puppet animation: Stop-motion animation using articulated puppets, often built around rigid bodies and joints. Puppet animation can preserve detailed surfaces that reshaping clay may disturb.
Replacement animation: Stop-motion animation that creates movement by swapping complete figures or parts rather than reshaping them. It achieves frame-by-frame changes through replacement, unlike claymation’s malleable figures.
Art Clokey: An American animator best known for creating the clay character Gumby. Clokey’s television work made clay figures familiar to generations of viewers.
The Adventures of Mark Twain: A 1985 stop-motion film using clay animation to depict stories by Mark Twain. Its clay figures support a feature-length adaptation of literary episodes.
Cutout animation: Animation made by moving flat cutout shapes and photographing them frame by frame. Cutouts create motion through repositioned flat pieces rather than sculpted forms.
Armature (sculpture): An internal framework that supports and stabilizes a sculpture. Wire armatures help clay characters hold poses while animators reposition them.
The Sculptor’s Nightmare: A 1908 short film by Segundo de Chomón featuring animated clay figures. It is an early screen example of clay figures animated frame by frame.
