Clef

A symbol placed at the beginning of a musical staff that assigns pitch names to its lines and spaces. Its position determines which pitches the staff represents.

Musical staff: A set of horizontal lines and spaces used to represent musical pitches in written notation. A clef assigns pitch names to the staff’s otherwise unlabeled positions.
Treble clef: A clef that assigns G above middle C to the second line of the staff. Its G reference fixes the pitch names for every other staff position.
Neumes: Early medieval signs used to indicate the shape or direction of sung melodies. Neumatic notation preceded the staff-based pitch assignments that clefs enable.
Grand staff: A combined treble and bass staff joined for notation spanning a broad pitch range. Its paired clefs let keyboard music represent low and high registers together.
Pitch notation: A system for representing musical pitches with written symbols. Clefs connect staff positions to the pitch names used in notation.
Bass clef: A clef that assigns F below middle C to the fourth line of the staff. Its F reference anchors the lower register’s staff positions.
Guido of Arezzo: An eleventh-century music theorist associated with influential methods of teaching and notating chant. His staff innovations helped make fixed pitch references useful in written music.
Piano notation: Written music for piano, commonly arranged on a grand staff. The treble and bass clefs divide the instrument’s wide range between two staves.
Musical note: A symbol representing a musical sound, often indicating its pitch and duration. A note’s staff position has a specific pitch only under a clef.
Alto clef: A C clef that places middle C on the third line of the staff. Its central C reference gives the staff a middle-register pitch map.
