Cleft palate

A congenital opening in the roof of the mouth caused by incomplete fusion of developing palatal structures. It may affect the hard palate, soft palate, or both.

Palatogenesis: The embryonic formation of the palate through growth and fusion of facial tissues. Cleft palate results when parts of this developmental sequence do not fuse completely.
Palatoplasty: Surgery to close a cleft palate and reconstruct the roof of the mouth. It brings the separated palatal tissues together to improve function.
Otitis media: Inflammation or infection of the middle ear, often involving fluid behind the eardrum. Palatal muscle differences can impair middle-ear ventilation and increase ear disease.
Primary palate: The front part of the palate formed from the intermaxillary segment during embryonic development. Its relationship to the secondary palate helps classify cleft patterns.
Submucous cleft palate: A cleft beneath intact oral mucosa, sometimes marked by a split uvula, translucent midline, or notched hard palate. This less visible form can cause speech problems without an obvious opening.
Secondary palate: The part of the palate formed behind the primary palate, including most of the hard palate and the soft palate. Its shelves must elevate and fuse to close the roof of the mouth.
Cleft team: A multidisciplinary group of specialists coordinating care for people with cleft lip and palate. Care often requires coordinated decisions across surgery, speech, dentistry, and hearing.
Eustachian tube dysfunction: Impaired opening or function of the tube that ventilates the middle ear. Abnormal palatal muscle function can limit this tube's opening.
Embryology of the face: The prenatal development of facial structures from coordinated growth and fusion of embryonic tissues. Palate formation is one part of this broader process of facial development.
Bifid uvula: A uvula divided into two parts, which can be an isolated finding or a sign of submucous cleft palate. It is a visible clue that may prompt assessment for an underlying palatal defect.
