Clement Attlee

Clement Attlee was British Labour Party leader and prime minister from 1945 to 1951. His government founded the National Health Service, expanded social security, and began the transfer of British India to independence.

National Health Service: The United Kingdom’s publicly funded health service, launched in 1948 and largely free at the point of use. Attlee’s government established it as a central pillar of postwar social reform.
Beveridge Report: A 1942 British government report proposing social insurance and measures to combat poverty, disease, ignorance, squalor, and idleness. Its blueprint shaped the social-security programme Attlee’s government enacted.
Ernest Bevin: A British Labour politician and trade-union leader who served as foreign secretary from 1945 to 1951. Bevin was Attlee’s forceful foreign secretary during the formation of Britain’s Cold War policy.
