Clergy

Clergy are people ordained or formally appointed to perform religious duties and lead worship in a religious community. Their roles and authority vary across religious traditions.

Ordination: A formal religious rite or process that appoints a person to a clerical office or ministry. It is the common route by which clergy receive recognized religious office.
Liturgy: The prescribed forms and practices used in public religious worship. Clergy commonly lead or administer a community’s liturgical services.
Monasticism: A religious way of life organized around communal or solitary discipline, often including vows and withdrawal from ordinary life. Monastics may be clergy, but monastic status and clerical office are distinct.
Ancient Egyptian priesthood: The institutions and personnel responsible for maintaining temples and performing rites in ancient Egypt. It provides an early example of specialized religious offices and temple service.
Investiture Controversy: A medieval conflict over whether secular rulers or the Church could appoint bishops and abbots. It exposed the political stakes of controlling senior clerical appointments.
Laity: Members of a religious community who are not ordained or appointed as clergy. The clergy–laity distinction defines who holds formal religious office.
Pastoral care: Support and guidance offered by religious leaders to individuals and communities. It is a recurring responsibility of clergy beyond conducting worship.
Religious order: An organized community whose members follow a shared religious rule or set of vows. Membership in an order is not the same as holding clerical office.
Levitical priesthood: The priestly and cultic roles assigned to the tribe of Levi in ancient Israelite tradition. It illustrates how ancestry and inherited duties could define religious office.
Clerical marriage: The practice or permission of clergy marrying, governed differently across religious traditions and periods. Rules on marriage affect clerical households, recruitment, and institutional life.
