Clifford Shull

Clifford Shull (1915–2001) was an American physicist who shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing neutron-scattering techniques to investigate atomic structures and magnetic properties of materials.

Neutron diffraction: A technique that uses neutron scattering to determine the atomic structure of crystalline materials. Shull helped establish it as a method for locating atoms, including light elements, in crystals.
Neutron: A neutral subatomic particle found in atomic nuclei, with a magnetic moment and a wavelength that can probe matter. Its neutrality allows it to penetrate materials, while its magnetic moment makes magnetic order measurable.

X-ray crystallography: A method that uses X-ray diffraction to determine the atomic structures of crystals. It provided a structural tool that neutron diffraction complemented, especially for magnetic properties and light atoms.
Magnetic structure: The spatial arrangement and orientation of magnetic moments in a material. Neutron diffraction revealed magnetic order that X-ray methods could not directly resolve.
