Climate activism

Climate activism comprises organized efforts to address climate change through public advocacy, community organizing, litigation, and political action.

Climate strike: A public protest in which participants, often students or workers, suspend ordinary activities to demand climate action. Strikes make climate demands visible by coordinating mass participation and disruption.
Fridays for Future: An international youth climate movement that grew from school strikes initiated by Greta Thunberg in 2018. Its school strikes helped make youth-led climate protest globally visible.
Civil resistance: Collective, nonviolent action that defies authority or normal routines to pursue political change. Some climate campaigns use noncooperation and disruption to raise the costs of inaction.
Environmental movement: A broad range of organized efforts to protect the environment and influence environmental policy. Climate activism developed within, and expanded the agenda of, environmental organizing.
Public opinion on climate change: The distribution of public beliefs, concerns, and preferences about climate change and responses to it. Campaigns seek to shift public concern and the perceived urgency of action.
Climate litigation: Legal action that seeks to enforce or shape duties related to climate change. Activists use courts to challenge policies and corporate conduct on climate grounds.
Sunrise Movement: A United States youth-led movement advocating political action on climate change and economic justice. Its organizing helped bring the Green New Deal into national political debate.
Social movement: A sustained collective effort to promote or resist social and political change. Climate activism operates through networks that coordinate action beyond single events.
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: A 1992 international treaty that established a framework for cooperation on climate change. Its negotiations gave activists recurring global political forums to influence and contest.
Green New Deal: A policy framework linking climate action with economic investment, jobs, and social protections. Activist campaigns helped popularize this expansive framing of climate policy.
