Knowra Clitellum Clitellum The clitellum is a thickened, glandular body region in certain annelids. It secretes material that forms a reproductive cocoon and supports reproduction.
Earthworm cocoon : A protective capsule produced by an earthworm’s clitellum that encloses eggs and sperm. Clitellar secretions form the capsule in which fertilization and embryonic development occur.
Annelid : A segmented invertebrate animal belonging to the phylum Annelida. The clitellum occurs in particular annelid groups, not across all segmented animals.
Earthworm identification : The classification of earthworms using visible anatomy, including body shape, bristles, and reproductive features. Clitellum position and appearance help distinguish earthworm species and life stages.
