Clitoris

The clitoris is an erectile organ of the vulva, rich in sensory nerves and primarily involved in sexual pleasure. Most of its structure lies beneath the skin.

Glans clitoris: The externally visible, highly sensitive tip of the clitoris. This exposed part is the structure most commonly identified as the entire organ.
Erection: The enlargement and stiffening of erectile tissue as blood flow increases. Clitoral erectile tissue becomes engorged during sexual arousal.
Genital tubercle: An embryonic structure that develops into the glans clitoris or glans penis. The clitoris develops from this shared early structure.
Clitoromegaly: An enlargement of the clitoris beyond typical size ranges, which may have congenital or acquired causes. It names a variation in clitoral size that can prompt clinical assessment.
Clitoridectomy: Surgical removal of all or part of the clitoris, historically performed for varied medical and nonmedical reasons. Its history shows how control over clitoral anatomy has been tied to social norms.
Clitoral hood: A fold of skin that covers and protects the clitoral glans. Its position over the glans shapes how that sensitive tissue is exposed.
Sexual arousal: A set of bodily and psychological responses to sexual stimulation or desire. Arousal changes blood flow and sensitivity in the clitoris.
Urogenital sinus: An embryonic cavity that contributes to parts of the urinary and reproductive tracts. Its surrounding tissues contribute to structures near the developing clitoris.
Clitoral adhesions: Adhesions in which the clitoral hood becomes partly or fully attached to the glans. They can cover the glans and sometimes cause pain or trapped debris.
Female genital mutilation: Procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for nonmedical reasons. Some forms involve cutting or removing clitoral tissue.
