Cloisonnism

Cloisonnism is a late-19th-century painting style that separates flat areas of vivid color with bold outlines, evoking cloisonné enamel and stained glass.

Cloisonné: A metalworking technique that separates colored enamel compartments with thin metal strips. The technique’s bounded enamel compartments inspired the style’s name and visual structure.
Émile Bernard: A French painter associated with the development of Synthetism and cloisonnist painting. His 1888 paintings helped establish the style’s bold outlines and flat colors.
Paul Gauguin: A French Post-Impressionist painter known for expressive color, simplified forms, and work in Brittany and Tahiti. His teaching and painting helped develop the approach associated with cloisonnism.
