Cloud observation

Cloud observation is the systematic identification and recording of cloud forms, heights, and changes over time. It supports weather analysis and climate research.

Cloud classification: The organization of clouds into named genera, species, and varieties based on their appearance and structure. Observers use its categories to record cloud forms consistently.
Cloud: A visible mass of tiny liquid droplets, ice crystals, or both, suspended in the atmosphere. Clouds are the objects identified and recorded during observation.
Weather forecasting: The use of atmospheric observations and models to predict future weather conditions. Cloud type and change reveal conditions relevant to short-term forecasts.
Ground-based cloud observation: The observation of clouds from the surface using visual reports or instruments. It supplies detailed local records but sees only a limited portion of the sky.
Cloud-base height: The altitude above the surface at which the bottom of a cloud layer begins. Estimating cloud bases distinguishes low, middle, and high cloud groups.
Cloud genus: A primary cloud category defined by characteristic appearance and structure, such as cirrus or cumulonimbus. Genus names provide the broadest standard labels in cloud reporting.
Climate monitoring: The long-term observation of climate variables to detect trends and characterize variability. Consistent cloud records help track changing cloud amount and distribution.
Weather radar: A remote-sensing system that uses radio waves to detect precipitation and estimate its movement and intensity. Radar tracks precipitation structure, whereas cloud observation also records nonprecipitating forms.
Ceilometer: An instrument that measures cloud-base height by detecting light scattered or reflected from a cloud. It provides instrumental cloud-base measurements alongside visual estimates.
Cloud species: A subdivision of a cloud genus that describes a cloud’s characteristic shape or internal structure. Species labels add detail beyond the cloud’s primary genus.
