Cloud storage

Cloud storage is a service model in which providers store digital data on remote, networked servers and make it accessible over a network. It separates access to data from ownership of the storage hardware.

Object storage: A storage architecture that manages data as objects identified by unique keys and accompanied by metadata. Many cloud services use objects to store files at large scale.
Cloud file sharing: The distribution and collaborative access of files through online storage services. Shared links and permissions turn stored files into collaborative resources.
Local storage: Digital storage installed in or directly attached to a user's device or computer. Unlike cloud storage, it keeps data on nearby hardware under local control.
Data sovereignty: The principle that data is subject to the laws and governance of the jurisdiction where it is located. A provider's storage locations can determine which legal rules apply to stored data.
Block storage: A storage method that divides data into fixed-size blocks addressed independently. Cloud virtual machines often attach block volumes as virtual disks.
Cloud-native application: An application designed to use distributed cloud infrastructure and services. Such applications commonly store user data and assets in cloud storage.
Network-attached storage: A dedicated file-storage device made available to users over a local network. It offers network access without necessarily relying on a cloud provider.
Vendor lock-in: Dependence on a supplier that makes switching to alternatives difficult or costly. Proprietary formats, interfaces, and transfer costs can complicate migration from a provider.
File hosting service: An online service that stores files and provides access through a website, application, or network protocol. It is the familiar user-facing form of cloud storage.
Content delivery network: A distributed network of servers that delivers web content from locations near users. It can cache objects originating in cloud storage for faster delivery.
