Clovis I

Clovis I was king of the Franks from about 481 to 511. His conquests united much of Gaul under Frankish rule and founded the Merovingian dynasty.

Salian Franks: A Frankish group whose leaders ruled parts of northern Gaul during the fifth century. Clovis inherited authority among the Salian Franks before extending it over other Frankish groups.
Battle of Soissons: A battle around 486 in which Clovis defeated Syagrius and captured his territory. The victory gave Clovis control of a major Roman enclave in northern Gaul.
Clotilde: A Burgundian princess and Christian wife of Clovis I, later venerated as a saint. Gregory of Tours portrays her as urging Clovis toward Catholic Christianity.
Christianization of the Franks: The gradual adoption of Christianity among Frankish rulers and communities. Clovis’s Catholic baptism gave later Frankish kings a prominent Christian precedent.
Baptism of Clovis: The conversion and baptism of Clovis I, traditionally dated to around 496. It became a defining episode in accounts of Frankish kingship and Christian identity.
Childeric I: A fifth-century king of the Franks and father of Clovis I. His rule and burial at Tournai provide evidence for the political world Clovis inherited.
Battle of Tolbiac: A battle traditionally dated to 496 between the Franks and the Alamanni. Later accounts connect the battle to Clovis’s conversion to Christianity.
Gregory of Tours: A sixth-century bishop and historian whose History of the Franks recounts Clovis’s reign. His narrative is the fullest surviving account of Clovis, though written decades later.
Nicene Christianity: The Christian tradition defined by the Nicene Creed and its account of the Trinity. Clovis’s choice of Nicene Christianity distinguished his court from many Arian Gothic rulers.
Tournai: A Belgian city where the richly furnished tomb of Childeric I was discovered in 1653. The grave illuminates the late Roman and Frankish world from which Clovis emerged.
