Cluniac Reforms

A movement to renew Western monastic life, begun at Cluny Abbey in the tenth century. It promoted Benedictine discipline and monastic independence from lay control.

Cluny Abbey: A Benedictine monastery founded in Burgundy in 910 that became the center of a major medieval monastic network. The abbey’s foundation supplied the institutional base for the reforms.
Rule of Saint Benedict: A sixth-century guide to monastic life prescribing communal prayer, obedience, work, and moderation. Cluniac monks organized their lives around its discipline and liturgical schedule.
