Coalition warfare

Coalition warfare is military action conducted by forces belonging to multiple allied states. It requires states to coordinate military operations while retaining separate political authorities and armed forces.

Combined joint task force: A temporary multinational military formation assembled for a specific operation or mission. It brings forces from several states under an operational headquarters without merging their militaries.
War of the First Coalition: The 1792–1797 conflict between revolutionary France and a shifting alliance of European powers. Its changing alliances show how coalitions can be repeatedly assembled and dissolved during war.
War of the Spanish Succession: A 1701–1714 European conflict over the succession to the Spanish throne and the balance of power. Its Grand Alliance coordinated multiple states against the prospect of Bourbon dominance.
Military alliance: An agreement among states to cooperate in defense or military action. An alliance can exist without conducting joint operations, while coalition warfare requires military action.
Interoperability: The ability of organizations, systems, or equipment to work together effectively. Shared procedures and compatible communications let coalition units coordinate across national boundaries.
Napoleonic Wars: A series of European conflicts between Napoleonic France and successive coalitions from 1803 to 1815. Repeated allied campaigns culminated in the defeat of Napoleon by a broad European coalition.
Congress of Vienna: The 1814–1815 diplomatic conference that reorganized Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. Its settlement helped establish a lasting pattern of great-power consultation after coalition victory.
Collective security: A system in which states agree to oppose aggression against any member or participant. It rests on a general security commitment, unlike a coalition assembled for a particular conflict.
Rules of engagement: Directives that define the circumstances and limits under which forces may use force. Different national restrictions can constrain what coalition forces may do in the same operation.
Allied invasion of Italy: The 1943 campaign in which Allied forces invaded Sicily and mainland Italy during World War II. British and American forces had to coordinate operations despite differing command structures and priorities.
