Cobalt(II) hydroxide

Cobalt(II) hydroxide is the inorganic compound Co(OH)₂, typically a blue or pink solid. It is used as a precursor to other cobalt compounds and catalysts.

Cobalt(II) ion: The Co²⁺ cation, a common oxidation state of cobalt in aqueous compounds and solids. Co²⁺ combines with hydroxide ions to form this compound.
Cobalt: A metallic chemical element with atomic number 27 and symbol Co. Cobalt(II) hydroxide is one of many compounds formed by this transition metal.
Cobalt catalyst: A material containing cobalt that accelerates a chemical reaction without being consumed overall. Cobalt(II) hydroxide can serve as a precursor to cobalt-containing catalysts.

Brucite: The mineral form of magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)₂, with a layered structure. Its structure is the model for the β phase of cobalt(II) hydroxide, though its metal is magnesium.
Precipitation (chemistry): The formation of an insoluble solid from substances dissolved in a solution. Adding base to a cobalt(II) solution commonly produces solid cobalt(II) hydroxide.
Oxidation state: A formal charge assigned to an atom in a compound under a set of electron-allocation rules. The numeral II specifies cobalt’s formal +2 state in this compound.
