Code of Points (artistic gymnastics)

The international rulebook that defines how artistic-gymnastics routines are judged, scored, and composed. It sets apparatus-specific requirements and penalties, and is revised periodically by the International Gymnastics Federation.

Difficulty score: A score reflecting the value of a routine’s recognized skills and fulfilled composition requirements. The Code assigns difficulty values and sets requirements that contribute to this score.
Gymnastics element: A named skill or movement recognized within a gymnastics discipline and governed by sport-specific rules. The Code classifies elements and assigns values to recognized skills.
International Gymnastics Federation: The international governing body for gymnastics that sets rules and oversees major competitions. The federation publishes and administers the Code of Points.
Perfect 10 scoring system: A gymnastics scoring approach that capped routine scores at 10.0 and combined performance judgments within that limit. Unlike this fixed ceiling, the Code separates execution from difficulty without a set maximum.
Execution score: A score that begins at a fixed maximum and is reduced for faults in performance and form. Execution deductions measure errors separately from the routine’s difficulty.
Artistic gymnastics: An Olympic gymnastics discipline in which athletes perform routines on apparatus such as the floor, beam, and bars. The Code covers the rules for this discipline’s men’s and women’s events.
FIG Code of Points: The International Gymnastics Federation’s rulebooks for evaluating routines in its gymnastics disciplines. The artistic-gymnastics Code is part of the federation’s broader set of discipline-specific codes.

Artistic gymnastics judging: The evaluation of artistic-gymnastics routines by judges under rules governing difficulty, execution, and performance. The Code supplies the criteria and procedures judges apply.
Apparatus (gymnastics): A piece of equipment used for a gymnastics event, such as the balance beam or parallel bars. Scoring rules and composition requirements vary by apparatus.
