Cognate

A cognate is a word in one language descended from the same ancestral word as a word in another language. Cognates can differ in sound, spelling, and meaning.

Proto-language: A reconstructed or historically documented ancestral language from which later languages descend. Cognates are traced back to a shared ancestral form in a proto-language.
Historical linguistics: The study of how languages change and how they are related through time. Cognacy is evidence used to reconstruct language histories.
English father and Latin pater: A cognate pair linking English father with Latin pater through an inherited Indo-European word. Their differing initial consonants exemplify regular sound correspondences.
Homophone: A word that is pronounced like another word but has a different meaning or origin. Shared pronunciation does not establish the shared ancestry required for cognacy.
Comparative method: A procedure for reconstructing language history by comparing systematic correspondences among related languages. It identifies cognates through recurring sound correspondences rather than superficial resemblance.
Language family: A group of languages descended from a common ancestral language. Languages in the same family often preserve cognate vocabulary.
