Colchicine

Colchicine is a plant-derived alkaloid that binds tubulin and disrupts microtubules. It is used to treat gout and other inflammatory conditions and to study chromosomes.

Tubulin: Tubulin is a protein that assembles into microtubules, which support cell structure, transport, and division. Colchicine binds tubulin and prevents its assembly into microtubules.
Gout: Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints and surrounding tissues. Colchicine treats acute attacks by limiting crystal-triggered inflammatory responses.
Colchicum autumnale: Colchicum autumnale is a poisonous flowering plant native to Europe and parts of western Asia. Its seeds and corms contain colchicine, the source of the drug's name.

NSAID: A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug reduces pain and inflammation without being a corticosteroid. NSAIDs treat gout inflammation through prostaglandin pathways rather than microtubule disruption.
Mitosis: Mitosis is the process by which a eukaryotic cell divides its duplicated chromosomes between two nuclei. Microtubule disruption arrests dividing cells during chromosome separation.
Pericarditis: Pericarditis is inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, often causing chest pain. Colchicine is used with other treatments to reduce symptoms and recurrence.
