Coleoptera is the insect order of beetles, distinguished by hardened forewings called elytra that cover and protect the hindwings and abdomen.

Elytron: A hardened forewing of a beetle that protects the hindwing and much of the body. These defining forewings distinguish beetles from other insect orders.
Colorado potato beetle: A leaf beetle whose larvae and adults feed on potato plants and related crops. It is a major agricultural pest and a classic case of insecticide resistance.
Coleoptera fossil record: The fossil evidence documenting beetles from ancient geological periods to the present. Fossils trace the order's long history and changes in beetle diversity.

Diptera: The insect order containing true flies, with one functional pair of wings and hindwing-derived halteres. Flies lack the hardened forewings characteristic of beetles.
