Colin Renfrew

Colin Renfrew is a British archaeologist whose work reshaped the study of prehistoric Europe and proposed an agricultural origin for the spread of Indo-European languages.

Anatolian hypothesis: The hypothesis that Indo-European languages spread from Anatolia with early farming communities. Renfrew made this account a major alternative to steppe-based explanations of Indo-European dispersal.
Indo-European languages: A family of languages that includes English, Hindi, Greek, and many others across Europe and Asia. Renfrew’s origin theory addresses how this language family spread.
Kurgan hypothesis: The hypothesis that Proto-Indo-European originated among steppe pastoralists north of the Black Sea and spread through migrations. It contrasts with Renfrew’s Anatolian proposal in homeland, timing, and proposed agents of expansion.
